Light Between the Pillars

MONT-SAINT-MICHEL ABBEY, NORMANDY, FRANCE

Beneath the abbey, the nave-like interior falls almost entirely into shadow. Stone pillars repeat through the frame, turning structure into rhythm. A narrow seam of light at the far end pulls the eye through the darkness. The floor holds a few hard reflections; the rest is mass, arch, and void. It is a view defined less by the building’s scale than by what the light chooses to reveal.
